According to Einstein's theory of relativity, nothing can move faster than the speed of light, so there is a certain area that nothing can leave. This space is not flat: it is deformed, curved by the substance and energy in it. This area is called a black hole, and its boundary is the event horizon. This horizon is created by light that is unable to leave the black hole and therefore "hovers" on this horizon.
